Posted by - March 31st, 2011

Pop quiz! Suppose you have 23 farmers. Seventeen of them are Republicans. Six of them are Democrats. They’ve all received federal farm subsidies. Boom—that’s all you know. How much farm subsidy money would you guess those six Democrats have received compared to those seventeen Republicans? Or numerically, what’s the ratio between total Dem subsidies and [...]

Hey, console fanboys: stop fighting and hook up already

Posted by - March 31st, 2011

For as long as I can remember, gamers have been bickering over what console is ‘the best’. 360, PS3, PC, Wii, PS2, Gamecube, N64, Saturn, GameGear, DS, PSP, Genesis, SNES, NeoGeo, NES, Atari… or even the grand-daddy of them all, the wise but ancient Magnavox Odyssey. People have spent more time on these arguments than over who’s the better captain, Picard or Kirk [1].

Discussing and comparing consoles can be fun, and should be embraced by gamers.

But should it be 80% of what we discuss?

Whenever I check out the comments for a new game review, or scan over the headlines of a game journalism aggregator like N4G, I instinctively cover my testicles. Why? Because, somewhere amidst those myriad lines of text, a fanboy/girl/person will start a flame war that will singe all innocent passers-by, like the internet equivalent of a swift kick to the balls.

There are many times when I’m all about entering the console comparison discussion. Contrasting the pros and cons of current and past gaming machines is vitally important, as it catches the eye of console-makers. By providing marketing research to companies like Sony, Sega, Nintendo, Apple, or the aspiring entrepreneur who will eventually create his own console manufacturing company, we journalists and gamers pave the way for a bright gaming future.

That said, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I’m tired of reading this shit every damn day.

When it comes down to it, all major video game consoles have done something we gamers can applaud and respect: they’ve given us a platform on which we can play more games. This is not a bad thing. Microsoft’s console may seem to favour pumping out meaty, testosterone-ridden first-person shooters that I don’t particularly enjoy, and the Wii may be a juvenile rainbow factory, powered by happy thoughts and unicorn giggles (the products of which will likely give you type 1 diabetes), but both bring games to the table.

All consoles have the capacity to do good. We should focus on that.

So as we embark into a new episode of the console wars – the 3DS vs NGP – here is my request to you, stranger of the internet: the next time you feel the need to leap into a console flame war, don Sony’s corporate logo as a tabard, or obliterate a pinata of Mario while dressed as the Master Chief, just remember…

When we fight amongst ourselves, the jocks win.

LotBraining Mental Training: Nirvana or a Pricey Way to Find Zen?

Maybe. Given that there are a few different schools of thought when it comes to the power of meditation and mental preparation for life balance and success, the answer to whether or not an app can help you develop focus and concentration is best left to the experts. And expert research is what title="Download LotBraining on App Store" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lotbraining-mental-training/id413201526?mt=8&partnerId=30&siteID=saW0nB/fQ6o" target="_blank">LotBraining Mental Training for Personal Development claims to bring to iOS devices.

The title="lotbraining developers" href="http://www.lotbraining.com/" target="_blank">developers say that LotBraining is based on similar training techniques used in NASA’s space exploration program. The app addresses seven key areas of personal and professional development – success, joy, relaxation, confidence, courage, health, and motivation — with training modules designed to teach users to “focus and streamline one’s own mental processes.”

Focus is “practiced” by concentrating on a slowly pulsating symbol that represents a specific characteristic. Simple instructions remind you that breathing can enhance the experience.

I haz a /squeeeeeeee

Posted by - March 29th, 2011

As referenced last week, there is a reason besides being low on healers that will keep my guild from letting me raid on my mage any time soon.

And it came with a /squeeeeeeeeeeee.

Those of you that happen to live within a 25-mile radius probably heard it happen, others found out through my status on Facebook or gmail.

For the rest, here is a pictorial clue:

That’s right, bitches, I got my shoulders.

Or as they are affectionately known, the birdbaths.

The most important thing here is that we downed Cho’Gall.

Interestingly enough, my 25-man guild has downed him on 10-man only. Twice now, but only on 10, not on 25.

(Why do we keep insisting on being a 25-man guild? Oh yeah, because it’s supposed to be easier. Technically yes, skillwise it has been demonstrated to be resoundingly more difficult on 25. But enough of that.)

Last Monday the 10-man raid picked up where the 25 had left off – staring at all 4 of Cho’Gall’s eyes. We had been able to phase him a few times, but worship stacks were out of control with all the special snowflakes standing off in their own little corners, too far to be interrupted and the other special snowflakes assuming we would heal through Corrupting Crashes and the resulting excess Corruption in P2. But I digress again.

Monday night we walked in, got down to business, and downed the bastard.

Interrupts were smooth, people were stacked tight, adds were taken down in short order, no one stood in the bad.

Guild achievement spam ensued.

He only drops one tier token on 10-man. DH runs with loot council and the list of who would be getting what pieces was made a while ago, updated as people phased in and out of guild activity. No one but the GM and officers really knew where anyone was on the list. About the only thing we knew was that preference would be given to tanks and healers and those getting a 4-piece bonus.

The Shoulders of the Forlorn Conqueror (paladin/priest/warlock ) dropped. The raid had a paladin tank, a paladin healer. me on my priest healer, and a warlock.

The healer channel erupts in congratulations to me, but that has happened before and I didn’t get the drop so I wasn’t holding my breath. (Yes, I know that some DPS can convert spirit to hit. But if a HEALER is rolling on spirit gear to replace a GREEN you let the healer have it. Otherwise, don’t come crying to the healers when we don’t have the mana regen to keep your ass alive after you decide to stand in the stupid.)

The officer in charge of handing out the loot says, “gratz Selwyn” and his loot add on sends, “[Shoulders of the Forlorn Conqueror] awarded to Selwyn” to raid warning. I hear the sound of an item hitting my bag and realize I had, in fact, been holding my breath.

And then the /squeeeeee fest began.

This is the first tier of raid content that I have been involved in from the start. And here I am, the first one in my guild to be in full 4-piece T11 – and it’s getting buffed next patch!

And that’s the last piece of gear I had to replace (I was using Heroic blue DPS shoulders) to be at full 359. There might conceivably be side-grades for me in the nature of trinkets or getting my tier helm, but I am done with collecting gear (on this toon) until the next raid.

So the guild wouldn’t let me switch to another toon for our progression raids even if I begged. That’s OK, raiding is really the only thing I enjoy on Selwyn.

I offer to sit so other healers can be brought in and get gear, but we’re at the point where towards the end of the raiding week we don’t have any other healers to bring in. The GM has asked me to start recruiting healers… guess I had best get cracking on that.

All you need to know about windshield repairs

Posted by - March 28th, 2011

In case you find yourself driving down the highway and obtaining a chip or ding within your windshield, don’t wait in acquiring it fixed. That tiny chip or fracture can quickly escalate into one thing much larger and compromise the structural safety of one’s windshield. It is also against the law in quite a few states to drive close to with damage to your windshield.

Taking Your Car to a Repair Shop

Don’t just take your car anywhere to get it evaluated . Ask and call close to for references of outstanding auto glass repair technicians. You don’t want somebody with tiny or no history in this area as the windshield is often a very essential safety mechanism in cars. Whenever you select a company, be certain to obtain an accurate price quote from them along with a time frame wherever they will repair or swap out your windshield. Also, depending over a price quote, you may ask your insurance carrier to determine what your deductible for windshield replacement is.

Repair or Swap out ?

When you buy your new car, your windshield is in beneficial condition and has met the highest quality safety standards. Unfortunately, if you will need your windshield swapped accessible are no guarantees how the new windshield is going to be as the same high quality specimen. Replacements don’t need to meet the same safety and high quality expectations as new cars, therefore, if there’s a chance that you can have your ding or fracture repaired, it is quite beneficial. Repairing your windshield allows you to retain the original windshield which offers you a larger safety measure knowing it met high safety standards. Often be certain to ask your technician if repair is feasible before permitting them to transform the whole windshield.

Windshield Repair May be All You Need

Yes, it’s disconcerting as soon as we are driving down the road and hear the dreaded sound of a thing hitting our windshield. Our hearts sink a tiny and we quickly scan the windshield to determine the damage. Most persons automatically think they will have to swap out the whole windshield and which could be extremely expensive . This is why quite a few do not fix about that small ding or crack . They don’t want to bear the cost of the money and figure that modest damage isn’t hurting them or anyone else anyway. I assure you though, that replacement with the entire windshield just isn’t often required . If your ding or fracture is smaller and has only affected the top layer of glass, more than likely the damage is also fixed by repairing that area instead of replacing the entire windshield.

Repair Options

There are numerous alternatives for auto glass repair. First, you are able to eat your car to an auto glass repair shop and have a skilled technician do the repair for you. It’s important to find a trustworthy company that has experience repairing windshields as the safety of one’s windshield is incredibly important for you and your passengers. A second alternative is to acquire a cellular auto glass repair program arrive to you. This will probably be more costly but will save you valuable time. A third selection is to acquire a DIY repair kit in the local auto parts store. They are really affordable and come with instructions, but if you have no experience working with windshields, I’d advise you to permit a trained technician do this for you.

Time is of the Essence

Regardless of what selection you use, keep in mind that safety needs to be your principal concern and time is in the essence. If you maintain off in repairing the damage, the little chip or splinter will grow and your windshield will be much less structurally sound. Also, in case you wait as well long, you will end up having to get your entire windshield swapped out rather than an easy repair towards the dinged area. Which is a difference of hundreds of dollars so be on a ball in getting your windshield taken care of.

Sexy iPhone Apps — Newer, Sexier, in HD!

Posted by - March 28th, 2011

Back when this article first hit the ‘net, href="http://www.nin.com/">Nine Inch Nails’ front man Trent Reznor had only recently assailed Apple for blocking an update to the band’s iPhone app because it used “objectionable words.” Apple had long maintained that only G-rated material would make it to the display windows of the App Store. A lot has changed since then.

Following OS 3.0, Apple loosened its standards. The reason? The ability to set parental controls. If not exactly welcoming to this new generation of “sexy apps,” Apple now permits more adult-oriented applications to pass through the review process.

Whether it’s because the newer apps were sexier or because the old apps were just low quality, many of the applications on AppCraver’s original list of quasi-adult-themed apps are no longer available in the App Store. Another big update for this list is the iPad and all the features that came with iPhone 4. Several of these apps now feature retina-display graphics, or HD versions built specifically for the iPad.

Here is our updated list of apps to help you get your groove on, for the 17-and-over crowd only:
